Maisie grew up in the kingdom of Nereitheas with her parents, Caspian and Sirena, and her little brother, Niven. She adored him, and the two spent most of their days exploring underwater caverns and befriending fish. Like all merrows (Celtic mermaids) Maisie was born with a magical cap: a thin veil netting dotted with soft colored pearls. Beneath the water, the netting vanished from sight, leaving the pearls to drift through her hair like constellations. When she wanted to walk among humans, all she had to do was remove it.She didn’t used to do so often. Life in Nereitheas was full and bright, and Maisie was content to stay there beneath the waves. But when she was 22, an underwater storm struck while she and Niven were out exploring, and he got swept away in the violent tides. She and her parents searched for what felt like forever, but couldn't find a trace of him. Her parents blamed her for not keeping him safe from the storm, and turned their backs on her.Heartbroken, she left the kingdom and the memories behind. Sometimes, when the pain swelled too sharp to bear, she would slip off her veil and let her tail vanish, walking the rocky shores of nearby coastal towns with bare feet and an aching heart. The bustling noise of the human world felt bittersweet. It was comforting in its distraction, yet hollow without her brother by her side.Eventually, she built a home in a quiet bay, tucked just beyond the reach of Nereitheas. It was there she met Nix, a pink axolotl with a mischievous heart and a gentle soul, and the two became fast friends. Several years have passed, but Maisie still holds out hope that she'll find Niven again. For now though, she cherishes her time with Nix, gaming, exploring, reading tarot, singing, and telling stories.She knows now how precious each moment is with someone you love, and she won't let her time with Nix fly by unappreciated. She does her best to keep a smile on her face for the sake of those around her, but she holds a deep pain in her heart, never knowing if her little brother will return, or if her parents will ever forgive her for his disappearance.
