D&D Glossary

A quick guide to the words you’ll hear constantly in our campaign, so nobody has to panic-translate mid-fight.

Ability Scores
Your core stats: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. These define your character’s raw potential, and everything else in the system branches off them.Modifier
A number added to your dice rolls, based on your ability scores. It represents natural talent or weakness when trying certain things.Skills
Specific actions tied to your ability scores (like stealth, perception, persuasion, or athletics). Skills are what your character can do in practice, not just what they are theoretically good at.Proficiency
Your character’s trained familiarity with something. If you’re proficient in a skill, tool, or weapon, you add your proficiency bonus to related rolls because you’ve practiced enough to be better than average.Initiative
The roll that decides turn order in combat. Higher initiative means you act earlier when a fight begins.Advantage / Disadvantage
Advantage means you roll two d20s and take the higher result.
Disadvantage means you roll two d20s and take the lower result.
It’s the game’s way of representing favorable or unfavorable circumstances.Inspiration
A special GM (or chat) -granted reward for great roleplay, creativity, or memorable moments. You can spend it to gain advantage on a roll when you really need it.Turn
Your time in combat. Here's what you can do!
Movement: how far you can move on your turn
Action: your main thing (attack, cast a spell, help, etc.)
Bonus action: a smaller extra ability some features allow you to use on top of your actionRound
A round is one full cycle of combat where everyone gets a turn. In-game, it represents about 6 seconds of fast, chaotic action.
A reaction is something you can do outside your turn when a specific trigger happens (like an attack of opportunity or a spell response).AC (Armor Class)
Your defensive number in combat. AC is the target enemies have to meet or beat with an attack roll to hit you. Think of it as how hard to hit your character is in the moment.DC (Difficulty Class)
The target number set by the GM for a check. If you’re trying to do something uncertain (climb, sneak, persuade, survive an enemy spell or effect), you roll and try to beat the DC. Just like with AC, meeting this number is considered beating it.HP / Temp HP (Hit Points / Temporary Hit Points)
HP is your health bar. When it hits 0, you’re down and out of the fight until you die or get helped back up by a friend.
Temporary HP is bonus buffer health that sits on top of your real HP and gets used first, but it doesn’t stack or last forever.
